Myanmar president congratulates NLD on success in general election

YANGON - Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Wednesday offered congratulation to the country's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) party on its success in polls, according to a press release of the NLD.

Presidential spokesman U Ye Htut said that the government will respect the decision of the people and will carry out peaceful transfer of power.

Suu Kyi has written to the leadership requesting a meeting with President U Thein Sein, Parliament Speaker U Shwe Mann and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing, to discuss "national reconciliation."

U Thein Sein accepted the offer from Suu Kyi but only after the Union Election Commission had completed the vote counting process.

U Thein Sein also thanked NLD for its cooperation to make Sunday's general election peaceful.

Suu Kyi said the request is also aimed at calmly and peacefully implementing the desire of the people expressed through Sunday's general election.

In response to Suu Kyi's letter, U Shwe Mann voiced that he will make cooperation in building a stable, peaceful, prosperous and developed country.

Min Aung Hlaing has yet to response.

Suu Kyi won the general election as a representative re-elected to the House of Representatives (Lower House) of the next parliament.

According to the update election result announced by the UEC Wednesday afternoon, 506 candidates have been elected as parliament representatives to three levels of the parliament with the opposition party's dominating.

Of the 506 representatives, 149 are elected to the Houses of Representatives (Lower House), 83 to the House of Nationalities (Upper House) and 274 to the Region or State Parliament.

Of the 149 elected to the House of Representatives, 134 are dominated by NLD, while the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) takes eight.

Of the 83 elected to the House of Nationalities, NLD dominates 77, while USDP shares four.

Of the 274 elected to the Region or State Parliament, NLD occupies 234, while USDP 26.

Up to now, the NLD has secured a total of 445 seats in three levels of the parliament including 134 in the House of Representatives, 77 in the House of Nationalities and 234 in the Region or State Parliament.

The USDP held 38 seats in the parliament shared by eight in the House of Representatives, four in the House of Nationalities and 26 in the Region or State parliament.
