Myanmar president calls to prevent reform losing momentum

YANGON - Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Thursday urged all stakeholders in the country to continue making concerted efforts to prevent the ongoing reform losing momentum.

U Thein Sein made the call in his message delivered on the occasion of the country's 68th anniversary of the Union Day.

He said, "The government has been exerting relentless efforts by signing the nationwide ceasefire agreement and holding all- inclusive political dialogue of all national political forces to develop the union system based on federalism for genuine peace."

Myanmar president said the government has accelerated reform momentum in political, economic, administrative and private sectors in a bid to promote stability and socio-economic development in the country.

He pointed out that in doing so, there are both achievements that have been recognized by the international community and expectations which have not yet been fulfilled to the full extent in some sectors.

U Thein Sein emphasized the need for the people of Myanmar to cooperate in building the nation after overcoming hardships and challenges.

On Feb 12, 1947, all Myanmar nationalities, led by General Aung San, held the historical Panglong Conference in Shan state and signed the Panglong Agreement, proclaiming the independence of the country.

That day was designated as Myanmar's Union Day.
