Guangzhou railway operator hits historic holiday high
The China Railway Guangzhou Group transported a record number of passengers during the May Day holiday, the operator stated on Thursday.
From May 1 to 6, the group transported a total of 17.81 million passengers, an increase of 599,000 passengers, or 3.5 percent compared to the previous year, setting a new record.
May 1 marked the peak of passenger flow, with 3.76 million passengers transported on that day alone, setting a new single-day record, according to the railway operator.
The main passenger flow consisted of tourists and people visiting family, followed by students and workers.
To effectively manage the large passenger flow, the railway operator laid on extra trains outside the regular schedule, employed double-unit train sets, increased the number of nighttime high-speed trains and attached additional carriages to regular-speed trains on peak days.
During the holiday period, the group operated an average of 3,664 passenger trains per day, with an additional 445 trains including 378 high-speed trains and 67 regular-speed trains.
