China expressed deep condolences over the passing of former Japanese prime minister Tomiichi Murayama and extended sympathy to his family on Friday, saying that his contribution to enhancing China-Japan friendship will be remembered forever.

Murayama was an old friend of the Chinese people and was committed to China-Japan friendship for a long time, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a daily news conference.

On Aug 15, 1995, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender, Murayama delivered an official statement on historical issues, expressing deep reflection on Japan's colonial rule and aggression as well as an apology to the victim countries of the war.

Calling him a statesman with a sense of justice, Lin said the statement represents a solemn declaration and commitment by the Japanese government to the people of victim countries in Asia and the international community, which needs to be honored with good faith.

"We hope Japan will face up to and reflect on its history of aggression, stick to the path of peaceful development and win the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community with concrete actions," Lin said.

He added he hoped that Tokyo will work with Beijing in the same direction to build a constructive and stable bilateral relationship that meets the demands of the new era.
