LOS ANGELES -- National Guard troops began arriving here on Sunday under an order from US President Donald Trump to quash protests sparked by federal immigration raids.

The president said that he will deploy 2,000 California National Guard soldiers after two days of clashes between demonstrators and federal agents following Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations across metro Los Angeles. The raids resulted in more than 100 arrests, drawing angry protesters who confronted agents with tear gas, flash-bang grenades and rock-throwing.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the deployment is aimed at "addressing the lawlessness" that erupted after the ICE conducted a "basic deportation operation".

California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the move as "purposefully inflammatory" and warned it could escalate tensions.
