An atmosphere of excitement filled Kenya's Kenyatta University on Thursday, as students from eight Kenyan schools gathered together for the Chinese ambassador scholarship awards and the 18th Chinese language proficiency competition for foreign secondary students — a platform showcasing Kenya's deepening cultural and educational ties with China.

The schools participating in the competition include Starehe Boys' Centre, State House Girls, Fanaka Junior School, Sukari Presbyterian Academy, Eaglecrest Academy, Mangu High School, Uthiru Girls High School and Blessed Narok School. The winning team will earn the honor of representing Kenya at the global finals of the Chinese bridge competition in China.

Participants demonstrated their Chinese language skills, performed traditional cultural pieces, and shared their enthusiasm for deepening international friendships.

Nyambura Salome, director of the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University, in her opening remarks emphasized the institute's commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding, academic excellence, and international connections through language education.

"To you, beneficiaries, I encourage you to make the best of this opportunity," Salome said. "I know you are hardworking students, and this scholarship is an impetus for your success. Focus on the bright future ahead of you. I look forward to seeing your improved GPAs, and I hope that on graduation day, you shall be at the top of your classes."

John Mark, a contestant in the competition, spoke about his passion for Chinese culture, "Chinese language and culture are some of the most beautiful things I have encountered. Chinese music first drew me in. There's something powerful in the rhythm and lyrics that made me want to learn the language. Now, I believe Chinese is one of the fastest-growing career subjects. The Chinese bridge competition gives us a platform to grasp real opportunities."

Mark added that the Chinese bridge competition offers a great platform for opportunities and cultural exchange between the two nations.

John Muruiki, Chairman of Kenyatta University's endowment and alumni programs, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the scholarship support. "This commitment inspires hope, excellence, and ambition among students. It strengthens cultural ties and fosters mutual development between Kenya and China. Let us continue empowering students and their futures. Use this opportunity to excel and remember to give back to your families."
