Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday that the United States should recognize that the international community requires solutions based on mutual respect and equal consultation, rather than imposing tariffs.

Guo made the remarks when asked whether China and Brazil had begun talks on responding to US President Donald Trump's plan for "reciprocal tariffs", which is set to take effect in April.

"China believes that protectionism leads nowhere, and there is no winner in a trade or tariff war. This has become a prevailing consensus of the international community," Guo told reporters at a regular news briefing.

He added that China will continue to take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.

Addressing China-Brazil relations, the spokesman underscored the shared roles of both countries as major countries in the world and representatives of the Global South.

"In the face of a turbulent international situation, (China and Brazil) have maintained strategic determination and worked together to make positive contributions to promoting world peace, stability and development," Guo said.

He also expressed China's willingness to collaborate with Brazil in implementing the consensus reached by their heads of state, pushing for more cooperation in various fields, and upholding true multilateralism, among others.

Furthermore, he affirmed China's support for Brazil's BRICS presidency this year and pledged to work together to promote "greater BRICS cooperation" for greater success.
