BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Wednesday unveiled its 2025 work programme, prioritizing competitiveness, regulatory simplification, and security while reaffirming its commitment to environmental and social standards.

Competitiveness remains central to the Commission's economic agenda, with efforts to cut red tape and improve entrepreneurs' access to capital. Defense and security are also in focus, with plans to strengthen the EU's defense industry in cooperation with NATO.

Meanwhile, environmental priorities include preserving ocean health, improving water management, and tackling climate change impacts.

However, the programme has drawn mixed reactions. Some officials warn that simplification efforts could weaken key policies. Others stress that competitiveness should not come at the cost of regulatory standards.

The Commission will also review policies in preparation for potential EU enlargement and work on a new Multiannual Financial Framework to improve access to EU funding.
