NEW DELHI -- The Indian government Saturday said it will develop at least 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047 for energy transition.

The announcement was made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the country's annual budget for 2025-2026.

"Nuclear Energy Mission for research and development of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) with an outlay of $2.3 billion will be set up," Sitharaman said. "At least five indigenously developed SMRs will be operationalized by 2033."

The minister highlighted that the development of at least 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047 was essential for the energy transition efforts of India.

"For an active partnership with the private sector towards this goal, amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act will be taken up," she said.

Last year, the Indian government said there were 21 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 15,300 MW at various stages of implementation in the country.
