China on Wednesday expressed its deep concerns over the turmoil in the Middle East and opposition to moves that fuel antagonism and escalate tensions, saying it rejected any violation of Lebanon's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

Iran launched a military attack against Israel on Tuesday evening in response to Israel's ground military operations in southern Lebanon.

"China calls on the international community, especially major countries with influence, to play a constructive role and avoid further turmoil," the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement.

China believes that the protracted fighting in Gaza is the root cause of this round of turmoil in the Middle East, the spokesperson said, urging all parties to work towards achieving a comprehensive and enduring ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible.
