Beijing on Friday urged the US Congress to stop pushing a bill calling on Taiwan to be given observer status in the World Health Organization.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged the US side to refrain from sending any wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces, and not to help the island expand its so-called international space.

China strongly rejected the bill, as it is in grave violation of the one-China principle and the three Sino-US Joint communiqués. It also runs counter to international laws and basic norms governing international relations, she stressed.

Hua pointed out according to United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and the World Health Organization Resolution 25.1, the premise for Taiwan to participate in WHO activities was predicated on observing the one-China principle, adding the central government has made appropriate arrangements for Taiwan to be involved in global health affairs.

"The one-China principle is the political foundation of Sino-US relations and the core connotation of the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués, which should be abided by the US side," the spokeswoman said.
