China "is greatly shocked by and strongly condemns" the terrorist attack at a hotel in Somali capital Mogadishu on Sunday, which has left one member of the country's diplomatic staff dead and three injured.

The attack happened when a suicide bomber attacked the Jazeera Hotel at around 4 PM local time on Sunday. The explosion left several killed and injured.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said in a statement on Monday morning that a security guard at the embassy, which is based inside the hotel, sustained serious injuries and later died in hospital. Three other staff members were hurt in the blast.

"The Chinese side is deeply shocked by the terrorist attack, expresses strong condemnation, feels great sorrow and offers deep condolences over the death of the Chinese staff member, and extends condolences to his family members and to others killed and the injured," Lu said.

After the attack, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council immediately initiated emergency response, Lu said.

"Currently, all the staff members have been relocated to a safe area," the spokesman added.

China has lodged representations to Somalia in both Mogadishu and Beijing. Somalia has said it will take all the necessary measures, spare no effort in helping the injured, appropriately tackle the relevant issues and ensure the safety of China's institutions and personnel based in the country, Lu said.

The spokesman said the ministry will maintain close contact with relevant departments to stake stock of the aftermath, closely monitor the situation, strengthen security and precaution, and champion the safety, rights and interests of Chinese agencies and personnel based in Somalia.
