Brazil spends $1.9 billion in 2010 election cycle

BRASILIA - Brazil spent $1.9 billion in this year's election campaigns for president, governors and legislators, the country's top election watchdog said.

Political candidates used up $1.63 billion in the first round of elections and another $270 million in the second round, according to figures released by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) on Wednesday.

Nine presidential candidates spent a total of $171.1 million, or $19 million each. The combined price tag for two major candidates - Dilma Rousseff and Jose Serra - was $156.65 million.
