US Army: 12 die in Texas military base shooting

HOUSTON: The US Army says 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting rampage on the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.

The Army says one shooter has been killed and two others apprehended on Thursday in the shooting and all are US soldiers.

An Army official confirmed the shooting, which occurred on the same day as a graduation ceremony at the base. But the official gave no details on the number of victims.

US President Barack Obama has been briefed on the shootings, and the White House is monitoring the situation, a White House spokesman said.

The attack happened at the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, according to the FOX 4 television station.

The base is currently in lockdown mode, according to Fort Hood's website.

Fort Hood is halfway between Austin and Waco, about 60 miles (97 km) from each city, in Texas.

Obama calls mass shooting at US army base horrific

President Barack Obama is calling a mass shooting at an Army base in Texas a "horrific outburst of violence."
He says he doesn't yet know all the details but promised the government would get "answers to every single question."

The commander in chief says it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

Obama also said his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and families of the fallen.
