Brazil's govt says to back citizen allegedly attacked in Switzerland

Updated: 2009-02-19 11:49 RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said Wednesday the government will continue to give all necessary support to lawyer Paula Oliveira, a Brazilian who has been allegedly attacked in Switzerland and is under investigation by Swiss police.
The 26-year-old woman said on February 9 she was attacked by three skinheads, which led to the miscarriage of her twin babies. The Swiss police, however, said that Oliveira was not pregnant when attacked, and that she might have hurt herself. Oliveira is being investigated for misleading the local law enforcement departments. Her documents and passport have been confiscated, and she cannot leave Switzerland before the end of the investigation. Amorim said he was not officially informed of the investigation, but the government will keep on supporting one of its citizens. "We must give attention and support to our fellow citizen," the minister said. "That is what we have been doing and what we will keep on doing, following international norms." Amorim denied the Brazilian government had rushed to make statements about the case. He said all government wants is a serious investigation into the case. |
