The BFA in Photography and Digital Imaging at the School of Art Design and Media offers an in-depth exploration of traditional and experimental genres of imaging through the photographic medium. The curriculum includes a comprehensive education in photography from established darkroom techniques to cutting-edge digital practice. Studio practice is delivered parallel to courses that examine the history and theory of photography in order to provide students with the knowledge, creativity and technical prowess to master the photographic medium.

Shannon Castleman

Shannon Castleman graduated with a BFA in Photography from the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, in 1993 and a MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, in 2004. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography and Digital Imaging, at School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Castleman?s work has been included in a number of exhibitions, both in her native United States and internationally.

University of Bolton (UK)

Bolton holds an important place in the history of British documentary photography for it was here in 1937 that Humphrey Spender; working for Mass Observation began his documentation of "work town".

This body of work created a foundation for the development of British social documentary photography. This small but important archive is held in the collection of Bolton museum and art gallery.

The University of Bolton continues to develop this tradition of social documentary photography by offering one of the very few practise based social documentary MA photography courses in the UK.

The course explores the capabilities of social documentary photography by encouraging students to engage with some of the important social issues current in our society.

It focuses on the fields of photojournalism and documentary photography and is designed for postgraduate students who wish to develop their knowledge and skills to develop a practice in these areas. ?Students explore issues of photographic culture, image economies, visual representation and develop an understanding of how the practice of creating photographic images is affected by these issues. Students apply learning through a series of practical assignments. ??

For their final piece of work the students produce a photo book, a portfolio of images and a website.
