Students cry in group photo because of sick classmate

A class of middle school students in Chongqing cried in graduation group photos because a sick classmate asked his father to show up in his place, Chongqing Economic Times reported.

Chen Zhuangguo, who suffers from leukemia, promised his classmates that he would show up for a group photo on Thursday. But because of severe sickness, he could not be present and so asked his father to take his place instead. Many classmates cried when the photo was taken.

Woman waits 60 years for lover

Zhao Danzhi, 80, has been waiting for her lover for 60 years without regret. Zhao, from Changchun, Jilin province, fell in love with Wu Tongyuan when she was 18. Two years later, Wu went to Shanghai to study and promised to return and marry her in two years. But she did not expect that the two years would become 60 years, and that Wu still has not shown up, Qilu Evening News reported.

8-year-old keeps himself safe with kidnapper

An 8-year-old boy "persuaded" a kidnapper to put down his knife after being kidnapped, in Xichang city, Sichuan province, on May 14. The boy recognized the kidnapper as his father's business partner and then acted cute to prevent being hurt by the man he called "Uncle Yuan". He kept talking to him and said that he is afraid of knives, which softened up the kidnapper and finally made him put down the knife.

Man shot dead for crashing into people

A man was shot dead by police after crashing into people in a truck despite being warned, in Zhenxiong county, Southwest China's Yunnan province, on Thursday. Three people were injured during the crash and the policeman who opened fire was commended for timely and effectively protecting people.

$16 million cash found at official's home

Law enforcement officers found almost 100 million yuan ($16 million) in cash in the home of a senior National Energy Administration official who was investigated recently, caixin.com reported on Thursday. Officers found the money when they took Wei Pengyuan, a deputy director of the administration's coal department, into custody at his home. They borrowed 16 currency-counting machines from a Beijing bank to tally the cash, the report said.

Fruit fetches high price in online auction

Thirty-six lychees from Gaozhou were auctioned for 40,772 yuan ($6,540) on a commercial website recently, Southern Metropolis Daily reported on Thursday. The fruit was produced by a tree that is believed to be 1,300 years old and was planted in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). Fruit from the tree is also said to have been sent to Yang Guifei, a much-favored imperial concubine during the Tang Dynasty who liked to eat lychees.

Big tumor ruptures while woman sings

A 45-year-old white-collar woman fainted after a tumor ruptured when she was singing high notes in a KTV show on Tuesday, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported. The woman overexerted herself, and the tumor, which had been in her body for eight years, broke. According to the Central Hospital of Wuhan, the 14-cm by-10-cm tumor－about the size of the head of a newborn baby－was near the woman's liver. It was successfully removed after four hours of surgery.

Chengguan officers sentenced for assault

A court upheld prison terms on Thursday of up to 11 years for four chengguan, or urban management officers, who beat up a fruit vendor last year, which led to his death. Chenzhou Intermediate People's Court maintained the prison terms of 11, five, four and three-and-a-half years, respectively, for Liao Weichang, Yuan Cheng, Luo Weiping and Xia Jiyu.
