Solo Russian's medal chance ends

The one-woman track team from Russia is out of medal contention in Rio.

Darya Klishina, the only person from her country allowed to compete in athletics at the Games, reached the long jump final but was eliminated after three attempts.

Her best jump of 6.63 meters in three attempts wasn't good enough for her to advance on Wednesday, with the top eight athletes getting three more jumps.

The sport's governing body originally cleared Klishina to compete, but then tried to backtrack by citing supposed new information in the ongoing doping scandal in Russia.

Klishina appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and won. She was reinstated early on Monday and started competition on Tuesday.

DiRado's career as analyst must wait

Swimmer Maya DiRado won't be joining the workforce as soon as she had planned after her Olympic success.

The American, who won medals in all four of her events in Rio, was planning to retire from the sport and start a new job as a business analyst in Atlanta next month. Instead, DiRado's representative said on Wednesday she won't join McKinsey& Co until January.

DiRado won the 200m back-stroke, upsetting triple gold medalist Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. She also earned gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay, silver in the 400m individual medley and bronze in the 200m individual medley in her first Olympics.

DiRado is set to make the media rounds in New York on Monday and Tuesday.

Gymnasts draw big numbers for NBC

NBC reached 24.1 million viewers on Tuesday for a telecast that featured US gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman taking the top two medals for the floor exercise.

The prime-time viewership swells by 6 percent to 25.6 million when cable and online streaming is added in.

As with every other night of the Olympics, the numbers lag behind the 2012 London Games.

But NBC should expect the numbers to shrink from this point. Competition is over for swimming and gymnastics, two of its most high-profile sports, and the loss by Kerri Walsh Jennings and partner April Ross in beach volleyball late on Tuesday ends their gold medal chances.
