Asian athletes make golden haul at Winter Universiade

Updated: 2009-02-25 10:39 The Chinese recorded an aerial skiing clean sweep by winning the mixed team event in 335.24 points after both men's and women's individual titles were taken by Jia Zongyang and Olympic women's runner-up Li Ni'na last Sunday and Monday. Both individual winners headed the Chinese team to the mixed victory along with Liu Zhongqing, the silver medallist in the men's aerial individual.
After a one-day break from the rink, Dong Feifei and Fu Chunyan made another 1-2 finish for China in the women's 5,000 meters after their winning performance in last Saturday's 3,000m. Dong, double winner of 1,500m and 3,000m, finished in seven minutes and 19.76 seconds for the title, and Fu, winner of the first speed skating gold for China, took the silver with a time of 7:20.38. Luiza Zlotkowska of Poland was beaten to the third place on 7:20.43. South Korea had its share of gold medal through Mo Tae Bum in the men's 1,000m speed skating in 1:10.05, beating Polish Konrad Niedzwiedzki and another Korean Lee Kang Seok to second and third. However, the snow events remain to be domain of the Europeans as Russian biathletes gained another two golds of sprint races. Artem Gusev showed his magic strength in the competition comprising 10km skiing and one round rifle shootings of 10 targets, finished first in 25 minutes 44.6 seconds, missing no targets in both standing and prone positions. Following the Russian, Ukraine's Oleg Berezhnoy and Jaroslav Soukup of the Czech Republic took the silver and bronze respectively in 25:46.5 and 26:11.9. Nadezhda Chastina, runner-up in the 15km individual race, took a convincing victory in the women's 7.5km skiing and one round rifle shootings of 10 targets. She missed once at the shooting range, the best among the top eight, and finished first with her superior skiing in 22 minutes 49.0 seconds. Teammate Marina Korovina and Agnieszka Grzybek of Poland took the silver and bronze respectively in 23:00.9 and 23:04.9. So far, Russian biathletes have wrapped up all four golds on offer from the past two days, aiming to seek gold rush in the coming pursuit, mixed relay and mass start events. Sweden also had its first gold medal of the Universiade, winning the synchronized skating in 206.48 points, the first time the event was put into the competition agenda. With four more days to go, China led the tally with 13 gold, 14 silver and nine bronze, followed by Russia (11-9-12) and South Korea (11-4-9). Japan was in a distant fourth place (6-6-2), while both Switzerland and Austria had four golds apiece.
