NEW YORK, July 16 - The Cleveland Indians made a long-term commitment to manager Eric Wedge on Monday, signing him to a three-year contract extension through 2010.

The Indians, coming off a disappointing 2006 season, have rebounded this year with a 54-37 record, putting them 1/2 a game behind defending American League champion Detroit Tigers in the American League Central.

"Through his relentless work ethic and strong belief in our players, Eric has led our Major League team to one of the best records in baseball two of the past three seasons," general manager Mark Shapiro said in a statement.

"I am confident that Eric is the right man to guide our team as we collectively pursue our ultimate goal of sustainable championship success."

The Indians have spent 63 days in first place this season and hold a two-game lead over Seattle in the wild card standings.

Wedge, 39, has a career record of 373-366 (.505) since taking over as Indians manager in 2003.
