Cooperation key to Asia-Pacific prosperity

Stability in the Asia-Pacific region was the focus of an international seminar held in Kunming, the capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan province, on Wednesday.

The seminar, which discussed the balance of power in the region looking forward to 2020, was held in conjunction with the first annual meeting of Kunming’s Center for Global Studies in the Asia-Pacific Region (CGAR).

Discussions centered on the best ideological foundation for stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and it was suggested a multilateral approach, which encourages cooperation between nations rather than one nation wielding disproportionate power, provided balance and a means to prosperity in the region.

The seminar concluded that a multilateral approach facilitated the building of mutual political trust, economic cooperation, and improved cultural communication between countries in the region.

Deputy secretary of the National Security Policy Research Association Qiao Liang said the CGAR mainly focused on studies of the international politics, economies and social issues in the Asia-Pacific region, which is compatible with the Yunnan’s opening-up policy and the emphasis on optimizing the province’s location as a gateway between China and ASEAN countries.

The branch center was unveiled in Yunnan University of Finance and Economics on December 22, 2010. A number of European countries, including, France, Germany and Holland, the United States, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and India were invited to the center, with the aim to create a transnational strategic studies and consulting organization.
