Plastics show provides a growth engine for industries

Chinaplas 2010, an international exhibition on plastics and rubber industries, opened in Shanghai on April 19 to provide a growth engine for various industries.

The four-day event at the Shanghai New International Expo Center has attracted about 80,000 professional buyers to visit and source the latest chemical, raw materials and plastics and rubber technologies.

More than 2,100 companies, up 18 per cent over 2008, are taking part in the event to exhibit 1,900 sets of machinery, said Stanley Chu, chairman of Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd.

"It is a strenuous work to install so many machines within five days," said Chu.

He said this year's exhibition scale has reached 150,000 square meters, a rise of 11 per cent over 2008.

"But the space is still not enough for an increase of exhibitors so we have to reduce the exhibition area of some companies," Chu said.

He said the fact that so many companies are eager to attend the exhibition has indicated China has high potential for the development of its plastics and rubber industries.

"It has injected new momentum into various industries and enabled enterprises to take advantage of early opportunities in the wake of economic revival," said Chu.

Of the exhibitors, 60 per cent come from abroad. A number of overseas associations and enterprises from Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, UK and Vietnam have organized bigger buyer groups to purchase what they need from the event.

He said this year, close to 400 local and overseas exhibitors are exhibiting at the exhibition for the first time, of which near 50 are from overseas.

"Their participation provides buyers with diverse choices of products, showing a new vision of economic recovery," he said.
