Fujian merchant killed in South Africa

A Fujian merchant was shot to death by armed robbers on the morning of August 2 in Vryheid city, about 400 km from Johannesburg, according to the Chinese consulate in Durban, South Africa.

The victim surnamed Tang was born in Fuqing, Fujian and had been doing business in South Africa for many years, said Liu Yantao, Chinese Consul General to South Africa.

Five armed robbers rushed into Tang's supermarket, which sold Chinese commodities, and shot a guard to death then opened fire on Tang, killing him instantly. They made off with an unknown amount of cash and goods.

Vryheid police had four suspects in custody and located the guns used in the crime later that day. They are currently conducting an investigation into the case.

Lou Xiandi, Chinese Counselor to South Africa, said although the new South African government has taken measures to deal with serious crimes, it is still very hard to see fundamental improvements in a short time. He warned Chinese living in South Africa to strengthen their prevention awareness and protect the safety of their lives and properties.
