British dominance at the Laoshan Velodrome track continued as UK cyclist Aileen McGlynn set the track on fire, taking the team to a fifth gold in cycling yesterday.

The partially sighted cyclist, who rode a tandem with able-bodied pilot Ellen Hunter, joined their teammates Darren Kenny, Mark Bristow, Jody Cundy and Simon Richardson, who won four gold earlier in the day.

Kenny smashed the world record by almost three seconds in men's 1km time trial CP3, which brought him his second gold in Beijing.

McGlynn's triumph took UK's track cycling medal tally to nine gold and one silver - a phenomenal performance that comes one month after their Olympic counterparts won seven out of 10 titles.

The other two gold medals of the day went to Japan and Italy.

Japan's Ishii Masashi claimed gold with a world record time of 1 min 8.771 sec in the men's 1km time trial CP4.

Italian Paolo Vigano took gold in the men's 3km individual pursuit LC4. He cut four seconds off the world and Paralympic records, becoming the first LC4 rider to win under 4 minutes.
