Eateries should pay proper tax

Comment on "China cuts tax to boost small businesses" (China Daily, Nov 1)

This is a good government move to reduce tax to help small businesses. But among the small industries, tax on food industries and restaurants needs to be studied more closely.

There are too many restaurants doing business without paying the tax they should. The catering industry is huge in China and tax evasion by many eateries is not uncommon.

Many restaurants refuse to give invoices to customers on many a pretext. The authorities should help the catering industry, but the latter is duty-bound to fulfill its obligation of paying taxes.

Laws must be strictly enforced

Comment on "Make road safety the new traffic mantra" (China Daily, Nov 3)

I agree with the author Deng Fei. One comment stands out and that is: "I own a car, I own the road". I'm not trying to say that all Chinese drivers have that mindset, but it's obvious that a majority of them do.

Education and a stronger enforcement of traffic laws should be at the forefront of policies. Passing new transport laws will do nothing to curb the carnage on roads unless the existing laws are strictly enforced.
