Charity should be transparent

Comment on "Survey: charities need more transparency"(China Daily, June 8)

I share the feeling of most of the interviewees.

Honesty, legitimacy and transparency are traits that all members of charity should possess otherwise people are bound to challenge their activities. The Shanghai Luwan Red Cross dinner scandal is a case in point.

The Shanghai charity members spent almost 10,000 yuan ($1,544) on just one dinner, inviting severe public criticism and prompting some to say malpractice is rampant in all charity organizations. Despite the Red Cross Society's response, the incident has shattered people's faith in charity.

A charity organization cannot survive without public trust, so charity officials should strengthen supervision to win it back.

Besides, just as the report said, new types of charity such as private funds also need supervision, because they raise funds through micro-blogs or online appeals, which could lead to online economic crimes.
