When actions belie words

(China Daily)

It is a sheer lie for the Dalai Lama to claim that he supports the Beijing Olympic Games, says an article in People's Daily. The following is an excerpt:

The Dalai Lama recently made a "confession" to "all the Chinese people", claiming that he himself "has long supported Beijing to host the Olympic Games" and "never has any intention to separate Tibet from China or create rifts between Tibetan and Han people" and he also requested Beijing to "rejudge" comments on him.

What he said appears to be "well-meaning" and quite "sincere". If he said what he really thought, it is good. But the problem is that the Dalai Lama never speaks his mind. He speaks in this way but acts in another one. His words often differ from his actions. It is hard for people to believe what he says.

Take, for example, those words about his support for Beijing to host the Olympic Games. Last year, the Dalai Lama frequently said in European and American countries that "2008 is a key year and the Olympic Games could be the last chance for Tibetans", demanding that Western countries link the "Tibet issue" with Beijing Olympic Games. This January, he told the media that he wanted his supporters to protest during the Beijing Olympic Games, expressing their appeal for "Tibet independence".

Stirred by the Dalai Lama, overseas Tibetan separatists violently attacked China's embassies and consulates. During the recent torch relay in London and Paris, Tibetan separatists crashed into the torch-relaying team time after time and even violently attacked a disabled torch-bearer. Do all the above facts show the Dalai Lama's "long-term support for Beijing to host the Olympic Games"? If he is a man who speaks his mind, he should have stood up to criticize these violent activities that were meant to disrupt and hijack the Olympic Games.

The real fact is that the Dalai Lama and his followers deemed the Beijing Olympic Games the "last chance" and masterminded various violent activities that are against the the spirit of the Games with the hope of promoting "Tibet independence".

On the one hand, they use violent actions to hijack the Olympic Games, making the best use of this "last chance" to win international support of those anti-Chinese forces; on the other, they want to put on a "non-violent" and "rational" face before the people of the world. This is the fundamental truth behind the frequent contradiction between the words and actions of the Dalai group.

If the Dalai Lama can really abandon "Tibet independence" and condemn the separatist activities, the channel of dialogue with the Chinese government is open and smooth.
