4 acquitted men get compensation

Four men who were wrongly convicted 13 years ago have each been awarded 2.27 million yuan ($337,000) from the State, the Jiangxi Provincial High People's Court said. Huang Zhiqiang, Fang Chunping, Cheng Fagen and Cheng Lihe were sentenced to death by a court in Jingdezhen in July 2003 for murder, rape and robbery. The appeal process had been ongoing since that time, and last year, the Jiangxi High Court ruled that the facts were unclear, the evidence insufficient, and the authenticity and legitimacy of the men's confessions in doubt.

Heavy rains cause death, big losses

Rainstorms in Liaoning province have left one person dead and another missing, and brought direct economic losses of about 4.2 billion yuan ($624 million), authorities said. Xiuyan Manchu autonomous county experienced heavy downpours this week, and 358,000 people reported losses, according to the county publicity department. More than 1,000 houses collapsed, while bridges, roads, electrical facilities and telecommunications infrastructure were damaged. More than 2,300 rescuers helped evacuate about 100,000 people.

Ex-official gets 11 years in prison

Wu Tianjun, a former senior Party official in Henan province, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for taking bribes. The Xiangyang Intermediate People's Court also seized personal assets worth 1 million yuan ($149,000), according to the verdict announced on Friday. Wu, a former member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Henan Committee, took advantage of his position to help others with business operations and promotions. He accepted money and gifts worth more than 11 million yuan personally or through others between 2004 and 2015.

Rare wild monkey goes ape in village

A rare wild monkey has been causing trouble recently for villagers in Yunnan province by attacking residents and pigs and stealing fruit. Dai Yongcui, a resident of Galabo village in Gongshan, was bitten on her thighs and ears by an Assam macaque, a Class 1 protected wild animal in China, on her way home on Thursday. The next day, another villager said he saw the monkey stealing pig fodder and peaches. Police used a tranquilizer gun to catch the monkey on Saturday.
