Fighting for global glory

China will host the WKA Kungfu King of the World free combat challenge on Oct 28.

Champions Liu Hailong, Bao Ligao, Yang Xiaojing and Zhao Zilong were all present in Beijing on Saturday when the China Wushu Administrative Center and GW Media announced details of the tournament.

Zhang Qiuping, chairman of the China Wushu Association, said the world's kick-boxing and karate masters will be invited to participate in order to promote the professionalization of the sport, which is a Chinese version of mixed martial arts.

The Chinese contingent will include world, national championship and National Games winners.

Brock looks Brown and out

Almost three weeks after the Cleveland Browns acquired Brock Osweiler in a surprise trade with the Houston Texans, the quarterback remains in limbo.

All signs indicate Osweiler will either be traded or released before the upcoming season.

Cleveland head coach Hue Jackson told NFL Network he is preparing as if Osweiler will remain on his roster.

The Browns, 1-15 last season, have the No 1 pick in the April 27-29 NFL Draft.

Curling

Canada crowned at Beijing worlds

Canada, led by skip Rachel Homan, carried its dominance throughout the World Women's Curling Championship and breezed past Russia 8-3 in Beijing on Sunday to lift its 16th world title.

Canada won all its 13 matches in the event and the final victory came as no surprise for the reigning Olympic champion, although Homan said it wasn't as easy as it looked.

"I'm so excited, and it was a tough competition. I'm just so happy to win one more gold medal for Canada," said Homan.

"It was good playing in Beijing. The venue is great and Beijing is a great city. The people are very nice."

Costa hobbled during training

Spain and Chelsea striker Diego Costa sustained an ankle injury in training on Sunday that could rule him out of Tuesday's friendly against France, his country's soccer federation said.

"He stays with the squad but his participation in the game on Tuesday in Paris is uncertain," Spanish officials said in a statement.

Costa scored one of Spain's goals in its 4-1 World Cup qualifying win over Israel in Gijon on Friday.

Coyotes taking a look at Keller

The Arizona Coyotes have signed forward Clayton Keller, their first-round draft pick last year, to an entry-level contract.

Coyotes general manager John Chayka said on Sunday that Keller, the the seventh overall pick in last year's NHL entry draft, will remain with Arizona for the remainder of the NHL season. With seven games left, the rebuilding Coyotes (27-39-9) have no chance of qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The 18-year-old Keller just completed his freshman year at Boston University, where he led the team with 21 goals and 24 assists in 31 games.
