At the honk of a horn, the first electric-powered coach of the Urumqi subway?No 1?was unveiled to the public on Nov 1.

The train, in mixed colors of white, blue and yellow, represents three regional features of the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, which is one of China's main fruit-producing regions thanks to its exposure to long time sunlight.

"White symbolizes snowy mountains, blue means pure lakes and yellow represents melons," said a commentator at the unveiling.

The information screens located inside the carriage are displayed in Chinese, Uyghur language and English.

The train features many original designs, including evacuation gates, waist support designs on the seats and special areas for wheelchairs, strollers and luggage.

"The evacuating gates are much larger than many trains in other regions," said He Enguang, vice president of CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co, who manufactured the trains.

Assembly and debugging work on the first carriage has been completed and the train will be put to use in 2017 when other carriages are completed.
