Government officials in Karamay, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region have started learning Uygur language to better communicate with local Uygur people.
A working group formed by a dozen officials from Han ethnic groups in the administrative committee of the Northwest Xiangyang Community recently launched Uygur language courses.
Their teacher Zhong Yanguo is an official at the Karamay municipal government. He majored in Uygur language at Xinjiang Normal University and is proficient in Uygur language listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation skills.
The working group members take Uygur lessons after work. After two months' study, nearly all the officials were able to speak simple expressions in Uygur language and gained a better understanding about the unique culture and value of the Uygur ethnic group.
"Language barrier has been a problem for us when working with Uygur residents. We learn their language, history and culture for more efficient communication. We have a sincere desire to serve all the people in our community regardless of their origins," said Sheng Zhiyong, director of the working group.
