Meng Jianzhu, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that China needs to concentrate on pilot judicial reforms and give the public a feel for justice and fairness in every case.

He made the remarks at a meeting on judicial reforms in Shanghai, July 23 - 24.

Meng called on the judiciary nationwide to continue with the Party’s reform mission, including improving judicial responsibility, which is the cornerstone of the new round of reforms and a decisive part in building an efficient and fair socialist judicial system.

He went on to tell the gathering that seven provinces and municipalities, including Shanghai, have had pilot plans over the past year to push ahead with the reforms and have achieved a lot of success. He said that he hoped other areas will learn from them, come up with their own plans in line with their own conditions and continue the reform projects in the future.

He also pointed out that other deeply rooted problems will arise so that the judiciary nationwide should make a greater effort to tackle the most serious problems and make breakthroughs in the judicial reforms.

Meng concluded his talk by saying that young people and cadres in the law should have more opportunities to stand out, but that fairness and openness need to be guaranteed in the selection of judges and procurators, and that reforms in the judicial case system have resulted in a big rise in the number of cases so we need to make a greater effort in tapping our potential to make better use of the country’s judicial resources.
