The Imperial Garden is a large scenic zone surrounding the Yungang Grottoes, which was highly praised by Li Daoyuan, a famous writer and geographer in Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386-534).
 
Yungang Grottoes 2011-09-28
Yungang Grottoes were chiseled during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD368-534). It was the first large-scale royal grotto project that was constructed by the state.
 
Huayan Temple 2011-09-28
The magnificent temple, named after a classic Buddhist scripture, was built during the Liao Dynasty (AD 907-1125).
 
Datong City Wall 2011-09-28
Datong city wall has beared significant strategic importance since ancient times, particularly since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
 
Xuankong means hanging in the air for which the temple is famous for. It is located in the middle of the mountain and has existed for more than 1,500 years.
 
Northwest China's Shanxi Province claims possession of rich cultural and historical heritage, having more than 70% of all ancient architecture in China built before the Liao and Song Dynasties.
 
It's hard to believe that a visit to Shanxi, two provinces away from Beijing, could qualify as a destination for day trip.
