Pingyao county is well known as a cultural county boasting more than 300 historical sites. Rishengchang - China's first piaohao, a draft bank that allows people to exchange drafts for cash at its branches in the country, was created in Pingyao. The Shuanglin Temple was praised as the Treasure of Painted Sculpture in the East.
The ancient city of Pingyao was originally built during the Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century-771 BC). It has a history of over 2,700 years, and has been ranked among China's Famous Historic and Cultural Cities since 1986. It was listed as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1997. It is also one of China’s four well-preserved ancient cities, along with Langzhong in Sichuan, Lijiang in Yunnan, and Huizhou in Anhui.
Pingyao will upgrade its cultural tourism by improving transportation service and controlling environmental pollution.
Pingyao county?is in the Jinzhong 108 Corridor Regional Integration Development Demonstration Area, in Jinzhong city, North China's Shanxi province, which is along National Highway 108, covering Yuci district, Taigu county, Qixian county, Pingyao county, Jiexiu city and lingshi county.
