The 2017 China Intelligent Vehicle Championship took place in Jiading district of Shanghai on Dec 11-13, evaluating the latest technology and functions of the country’s intelligent vehicles.

More than 50 teams from auto companies and universities participated in the competition, including four sub-categories of competitions featuring fully-autonomous driving, intelligent driver assistant, information security, and offline test.

One highlight of the championship was the fully-autonomous driving competition. Twelve teams competed in the final on Dec 13, simulating the scenario of driving from home to a destination.

Eleven tasks, including remote control, starting the vehicle, driving on the s-shaped road, avoiding pedestrians, accelerating or decelerating on a straight road, overtaking and changing lanes, following other cars, making a detour because of road construction, turning around on a ring road, avoiding non-motor vehicles, and automatic parking, were launched to test the sensory, decision-making, and executive abilities of intelligent vehicles.

Two scores were given to each team, one based on the team's performance in fulfilling the tasks and the other based on the total time the team used.

Vehicles attending the competition covered a wide range to types, including a mini car developed by Huaching Tech weighing only 30 kilograms and equipped with GPS, cameras and radar, a tour bus developed by Huanyu Zhixing Technology Co, and an internet-connected bus developed by Changjiang Electric Vehicle.

Total bonuses of 1 million yuan ($152,000) were given to the winners, encouraging participants to show their latest achievements and technology.

The China Intelligent Vehicle Championship started last year and is designed to be China's most authoritative intelligent vehicle test platform and a wind vane of China's intelligent vehicle development.
