A number of A-level toilets have recently begun operating at tourist attractions in Zhangjiagang, East China’s Jiangsu province.

The toilets are not only spacious, clean, and tidy, but also equipped with music players, ventilation systems, and free wifi.

Special facilities, such as dressing rooms, nursing rooms, and wheelchair accessible toilets, are also available.

According to local authorities, the city has renovated 56 tourist toilets since 2005, including seven at the 3A-level, 15 at 2A-level, and 36 at A-level.

The efforts were in response to a nationwide "toilet revolution" launched in 2015 to increase the number and raise the standards of toilets at tourist sites and in rural areas.

A total of 22,300 toilets were installed or renovated at tourist destinations throughout China in 2019, accounting for 117 percent of the annual target, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The ministry also partnered with Baidu to develop an online toilet map for tourists to help them find the nearest toilet (including handicap accessible ones) through the Baidu Map app.

To date, around 98,000 tourist toilets have been marked on the map app, officials said.
