Nestlé healthy kids global program launched in Henan

The "Chinese Children's Nutrition & Health Education Project - Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Program" officially launched in the Jianye Little Harvard School of Zhengzhou city, Henan Province. This is the first time the program landed in Henan, since it kicked off in 2010 in China.

At the opening ceremony, student nutrition education experts from Chinese Nutrition Society, National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety, as well as Chinese Association for Student Nutrition & Health Promotion, together with the students, attended nutrition and health education activities. The program was hosted by Henan Provincial Civilization Office and Sina.com, co-hosted by Zhengzhou Youth League Municipal Committee and Henan Sina.com, and supported by Chinese Nutrition Society, Nestlé (China) Ltd., Henan People's Radio Station, Henan TV and Orient Today.

The program aims at promoting proper nutrition and health knowledge to teachers and students between 6 and 12 years of age in rural and urban areas, training students to develop good eating habits from an early age, and lead a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, to popularize scientific knowledge of nutrition, and cultivate scientific nutrition concepts among students, parents, teachers, and school canteen staff. By the end of 2013, in conjunction with the "Student Nutrition Improvement Program", the "Chinese Children's Nutrition & Health Education Project - Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Program" has reached about 1,000,000 students and 28,000 primary school teachers, covering Beijing, Shanghai, Anhui, Hubei, Liaoning, Guizhou, Shandong, Shanxi, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Tibet, Yunnan, Guangdong and other provinces and municipalities.

With "Nutrition and Health" as its theme, this time the program involved a series of activities such as the Chinese Diet Pagoda, nutrition knowledge promotion and all kinds of fun and healthy sports. Over 300 students and teachers of the Jianye Little Harvard School participated in the series of interactive sports and games, which helped to raise their awareness and attention on nutrition and health knowledge.

The "Chinese Children's Nutrition & Health Education Project - Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Program" also adopted the teaching model of "train-the-trainer", and the first batch has completed trained about 60 teachers of nutrition-related subjects across dozens of primary schools in Zhengzhou. Subsequently, the program will conduct a series of "Nutrition and Health Forum" at several primary schools in Zhengzhou, in order to spread the correct nutrition and health knowledge to more students, parents and teachers in Zhengzhou.

Meanwhile, the program has a special nutrition and health topics on Henan Sina.com (http://henan.sina.com.cn/edu/zt/qcjkye/index.shtml), so that students, parents and teachers can watch and learn anytime, anywhere at their own convenience. The textbook "Healthy School" written by experts from the Chinese Nutrition Society and the National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety has been distributing to more than 1,000 primary schools in Zhengzhou.

John Cheung, Chairman & CEO, Nestlé GCR, shared that, "As a leading company committed to nutrition, health and wellness, we are very concerned about the healthy development of children. Currently, the ‘Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Program' has been introduced in nearly 70 marketsthat Nestlé has business presence, and it is an integral part of "Creating Shared Value." We hope to continue expanding the program, so that more teachers, students and parents can benefit from it. Meanwhile, Nestlé also look forward to working together with nutrition scholars and local communities to continue contributing to the nutrition and health of children in China."

According to Ma Guansheng, the Vice Director of Chinese Nutrition Society, and the Vice Director of National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety, "Inadequate nutrition and nutritional imbalances are the two most severe challenges facing children in China. One of the fundamental causes of these issues is the lack of health and nutrition knowledge among our parents and children. As a result, the society as a whole should pay attention to carrying out targeted "food education" for schools, students, teachers, and parents, raising awareness and starting to popularize nutrition and health knowledge among children from a young age."

As one the hosts of the program, Zhao Yunlong, vice director from Henan Provincial Civilization Office said, "It is hoped that by introducing the ‘Chinese Children's Nutrition & Health Education Project - Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Program' to primary schools in Zhengzhou, students can develop healthy habits from young, and are instilled with the correct nutrition and health knowledge, so that they can grow up with a happy and healthy body and mind."

"Creating Shared Value" is the cornerstone of Nestlé's corporate philosophy. Nestlé believes in order to achieve long-standing success it has to not only create value for shareholder, but also create social values.
