Pingdingshan has abundant resources under and on the ground. There are 57 kinds of proved minerals. The total output of raw coal is 10.3 billion tons. The city has long been called a bunker of the Central China. The retained coal reserves are more than 8 billion tons, accounting for 51% of the total reserves in Henan; the total reserves of iron ore are 606.4 billion tons, accounting for 60.5% of the total in Henan. It is one of the top ten iron mining areas in China. The forecast total reserves of sodium salts are 230 billion tons and the recoverable reserves are 1.08 billion tons, 89% of them are in an average grade, the single-layer average thickness is 27m, and development and deep processing of brine pans has become an important industry in Henan province for which the China Mining Association named Pingdingshan the city of salt.
Pingdingshan has abundant water resource. It has 174 large and medium reservoirs, including 4 large reservoirs, with total capacity of 2 billion cubic meters. The total volume of the water under and on the ground is 3.2 billion cubic meters. The sufficient water resource provides a good condition for industrial and agricultural production and urban water consumption.
