1. Education and technology

The city had two colleges with 13,127 students, 13 vocational training schools with 13,887 students, 148 middle schools with 159,798 students and 904 primary schools with 243,484 students.

There were 74 projects sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the provincial department of science and technology in 2012. Anshun was granted 36.23 million yuan ($5.9 million) in funding for research, increasing 28.7 percent from the previous year. There were 801 patent applications, up 77.2 percent, 220 of which were invention patents, up 139.1 percent year-on-year.

2. Culture, healthcare and sport

There was one art troupe, seven cultural museums and six public libraries home to 420,000 volumes. The city had six TV broadcast towers providing 92.9 percent of TV coverage, as well as 198,100 cable TV users; and four FM radio transmission towers providing 91.3 percent of radio coverage.

Its 2,003 healthcare institutions include 137 hospitals, seven centers for disease control and prevention and six maternal and child health centers, with 7,763 beds and 7,119 professionals, of whom 2,686 were licensed doctors and 2,683 registered nurses.

There were 421 registered athletes and 14 sport associations that covered the games of go, tennis, table tennis, basketball, swimming and sports for senior people. In 2012, a delegation of 180 members took part in the Second Peasant Games of Guizhou province, and won 91 prizes, including eight gold medals, 36 silver and 47 bronze medals. A boxer won the second place in the Women's 48 kg Class of World Boxing Championship.

3. Environmental protection and production safety

The total discharge of chemical oxygen reached 20,200 tons, dropping 6 percent from the previous year; sulfur dioxide emissions were 86,100 tons, dropping 7.7 percent; and ammonia nitrogen discharges dropped 5.6 percent to 2,600 tons.

There were 229 industrial accidents throughout the year, down 13.3 percent year-on-year, leaving 131 persons dead, down 13.3 percent, and 221 injured, down 0.5 percent, with direct losses of 6.75 million yuan, falling 32.1 percent.

4. Population

The permanent population rose to 2.3 million and registered population to 2.8 million, with the birth rate at 1.24 percent and a natural population growth rate 0.58 percent.

5. People's livelihood and social security

In 2012, urban per capita disposable income was 18,617 yuan, an increase of 14.2 percent from a year earlier; urban per capita consumption expenditure was 12,853 yuan, rising 8 percent; rural per capita net income reached 5,088 yuan, up 16.5 percent; and rural per capita consumption expenditure was 3,491 yuan, up 3 percent.

The city created 31,737 jobs in 2012, of which 8,829 were offered to those from families in financial or material difficulties and 14,302 jobs to laid-off workers. At the end of 2012, the unemployment rate was 3.2 percent, with 7,190 registered unemployed people.

The number of service facilities in urban communities amounted to 1,696. In addition, there were four social welfare homes with 310 beds and 106 adopted people, 62 nursing homes with 1,590 beds and 660 aged people. Special care and preferential treatment were given to 2,736 households, with subsidies totaling 16.4 million yuan.

A total of 107.5 million yuan minimum living allowance was offered to 36,002 urban residents who live below the local urban minimum living standard, and 452.7 million yuan to 354,582 rural residents who live below the local rural minimum living standard. This year, 66.17 million yuan was used in disaster relief, covering 844,600 people.
