The Fujian Provincial Public Security Bureau recently released a temporary regulation to allow the use of Taiwan-registered vehicles in Fujian province, sources with Pingtan's traffic management department said on Tuesday.

The move indicates that vehicles registered in Taiwan will be able to hit the road in Fujian soon, though the sources did not give any specific date.

Pingtan, in southeast China's Fujian province, is the Chinese mainland's first pilot zone opening up to Taiwan, and has already taken steps for the approval of Taiwan-registered vehicles.

In 2010, the provincial command center of traffic police sent staff to Pingtan to give guidance on the procedure for this approval, and also to give training to the traffic departments and officers, said Chen Bin, an officer with Pingtan's traffic management unit.

The regulations require that owners of vehicles from Taiwan must apply for a temporary plate, vehicle license and driving license from local traffic management departments in Fujian province before hitting the road.

The traffic management department will grant a license and plate within 24 hours after the submission of the application, and these plates and licenses are valid for a maximum of three months.
