The cutting-edge site is also mobile optimized to appeal to a new generation of digital-native red tourists, and integrates VR and augmented reality content.

Fujian takes special pride in its history as one of the main strongholds where revolutionary forces gathered to resist feudalism and Japanese aggression during the tumultuous period before the birth of New China. Sixty-two of Fujian's 80 county-level regions contained a base for the Communist Party's revolutionary activities during that period. The provincial government hopes the addition of cutting-edge technology will inspire a new generation to learn about the region's revolutionary heritage.

The move also makes solid business sense, as red tourism is a rapidly growing industry in China. More than 786 million people visited revolutionary sites in China in 2014, a year-on-year increase of 17 percent, according to National Tourism Administration data.
