To improve the city's image and tourist satisfaction, Xiamen launched a monthlong crackdown on illegal operations in the tourism market from August 18 to September 17.

The crackdown will focus on unreasonable low prices, one-day tours in Xiamen, unlicensed tour guides, and ticket scalpers. A press conference revealed that the most-complained-about problems from tourists included fake advertising, price gouging and forced consumption.

A total of 15 specialized tasks will be deployed around Huandao Road, Xiamen International Cruise Terminal, Gulangyu Island, Lujiang Avenue and Xiamen North Railway Station. The specialized tasks will focus on one-day tours, marine tours, the passenger transport market, and online tourism operations.

The illegal operation of home inns and malicious competition among travel agencies with unreasonable low prices will also be punished to regulate the tourism market.

Additionally, the Xiamen Tourism Bureau has announced a three-year plan to install more than 32 new toilets at tourist sites and renovate a further 100 across the city.

The city received 53.37 million domestic and overseas tourists in 2014, an increase from 2013 of 14.45 percent. And from January to June this year, the city received 26.99 million domestic and overseas tourists, an increase of 10.05 percent over the same period last year. The tourism and exhibition industry is expected to generate revenue of 100 billion yuan in 2016.
