From July 8 to August 16, the Royal Caribbean cruise ship "Legend of the Seas" will make Xiamen its homeport for 10 cruise lines covering Japan and Taiwan.
The planned cruise operation is the largest scale since the Xiamen Cruise Homeport has been launched. It is expected to bring 30,000 to 40,000 passengers to Xiamen.
The cruise ship industry is an emerging government-supported industry in Xiamen. It takes advantage of port and tourism resources in the city. In 2014, Xiamen International Cruise Terminal received 21 visits from cruise ships.
Xiamen Port Holding Group, Xiamen International Cruise Homeport Group, and Royal Caribbean International signed a deal worth 100 million yuan for a 40-day lease of the luxury cruise ship "Legend of the Seas," which will be put into service during this summer vacation.
The 69,130-ton ship, "Legend of the Seas," which the owners have called a "floating five-star hotel," is the first of a new series of cruise ships operated by Royal Caribbean International, which it calls "vision class." The new series of ships will feature greater selections of entertainment and relaxation options.
According to travel agencies, cruise travel is in hot demand in Xiamen due to Japan's visa-free policy and Taiwan's unlimited quota of Taiwan entry permits.
This year is expected to be the best year for cruise tourism as ticket prices have been lowered by 30 percent, and more preferred policies have been put into practice, including the visa-free policy in Japan for passengers of cruise ships.
Xiamen was selected as one of four pilot cities for cruise ship transportation in China. The city is expected to receive a record 40 visits with 120,000 passengers from cruise ships this year. On June 22, the world's most advanced cruise ship, "Quantum of the Seas," called at Xiamen International Cruise Terminal. It was the luxury ship's first call in mainland China.
