Built on the ruins of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) imperial palace, Daming Palace Ruins Park will open to tourists from Oct. 1, the cultural relics bureau in northwest Shaanxi Province said Friday.
The Daming Palace was four times the size of the Forbidden City in Beijing, and served as the political center of the Tang Dynasty for 200 years. Only one percent of it has been uncovered through archeological excavation, which began in 1957.
Zhang Zhiwen, deputy director of Shaanxi cultural relics bureau, said that since 2007, 100,000 local residents living within 3.5 square kilometers of the site have been relocated.
An Jiayao, head of the Xi'an Research Office of the Archeological Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said excavations at the Daming Palace may last for 200 years.
