A tomb suggested to be 1,000 years old was found in Feidong county, Anhui province on May 28, 2012.
Zhu Qingli, a farmer in the Cuozhen township of the county, discovered a hole in the middle of his field while he was gathering oilseed rape. In the hole, the astonished farmer found a pile of ancient green bricks. He reported it to the local cultural heritage authorities as it occurred to him that an old tomb might lie underground.
It was indeed a Song Dynasty (960-1279) tomb, said Peng Yujiang, director of Feidong Cultural Heritage Administration, who arrived at the spot with his team on Tuesday morning.
The tomb remains intact, experts said, adding that archaeological excavation is not recommended at present, given that it is the rainy season. "For the purpose of protection, we won't dig it out for the moment. After the rainy season, we will invite more experts here, if necessary, for further examination and excavation," Peng said.
