The Phoenix Mountain, one of the three nature reserves in Tongling, lies 34 km southeast of the city proper of Tongling. It is principally composed of the Hengshan, Mianshan, Lingfeng, Tanshan and Jinshan hills. Boasting beautiful scenery, the mountain is renowned both at home and abroad for being "the land of Fengdan", which is one of the four famous medicinal materials in Anhui province.

Owning to a long history of copper production and to the widespread mysterious legends as well, a large number of famous scenic and historic interest spots can be found here. They include the Peony Garden, Love-sickness Tree, Drip Cliff, Stone on Which the Phoenix Alighted, ancient and famous trees in Jinglang, the Tomb of Cheng Zhu (982-1061, an ancient forestry expert), and Damingsi Temple. These combine to make the whole place seem like a gorgeous painting scroll, while also managing to convey a sense of quiet elegance.
