The bridge, first built in 1933, used to be the longest bridge in Changchun, capital of Jilin province, and has witnessed the city's history of the past seventy years. It is to be re-constructed on May 1.

Nanhu Bridge was burned down by the Nationalist Forces in 1948 when they were at war with the Communists.

In 1959, a new 128-meter long wooden bridge was built at the site of the ruins. It was replaced in 1978 by a 149.9-meter long and 29.5-meter wide new bridge, then the longest one in Changchun.
