Hosting the World Expo for the first time, China offered a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogue and exchange. The Expo Site became a global village. Local and international visitors flocked to the beautiful pavilions and rare cultural treasures of the world on display, and also got a taste of the quintessence of the world's diverse cultures through more than 20,000 cultural events.
Well-known people from home and abroad paid visits to the Expo with their families, like famed American movie star Robert De Niro. Shanghai Expo also offered Chinese citizens a chance to see the world, giving Shanghai the spotlight on the world stage.
The 2010 Expo in Shanghai added a glorious chapter to the Expo’s rich history. A record-breaking 70 million people visited the 2010 site, but that wasn’t the only Expo record broken this year. This year’s Expo had the most participating countries and was the most expensive Expo in the history of the world's fairs. The Shanghai World Expo was also the largest World's Fair site ever, covering 5.28 square kilometers. Shanghai Expo was the first World Expo to take place in a developing country. It ranks second to the 2008 Beijing Olympics as largest international gathering hosted in China. The Shanghai Expo is the first World Expo to focus on urban life. And, for the first time, a virtual Expo was launched, opening a new window for more people to view Expo-related activities.
