Forum promotes arts classes for underprivileged kids
A charity event that aimed to enhance equality of education by boosting arts study among children of migrant workers and teenagers in poor regions was held in Beijing on Oct 29.
The TAL Foundation invited representatives from art-education institutes including Hefeng Art Foundation, Sun Future Foundation, The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art and Candy Project to share each organization’s experience in tackling the related issues and find solutions.
The participants believed that arts education is critical for the development of children in less-developed regions. However, art has long been neglected because it is traditionally regarded as a subsidiary subject in the primary-education system.
In May, TAL Foundation launched the We Plus Project, whose purpose is to enhance education of children and teenagers of vulnerable groups and in less-developed regions.
"Popularization of art education is an important part of education development," said Zhang Jihong, director of the We Plus Project, who added that all children should receive it.
"We hope to promote education equity by ensuring that more children, including those from both urban and rural areas, children of migrant workers, and stay-at-home children have good art education."
The foundation announced it will select and fund innovative charity projects focusing on art education.
