Presumed single until proclaimed divorced

T'is the season for celebrity divorces, starting with the revelation by Twins singer Charlene Choi and actor Ronald Cheng that they are cutting the marital knot.

What?

The duo has been insisting for the past four years that they did not wed secretly in Los Angeles, in 2006. But at a press conference in Hong Kong the pair finally admitted they were married and explained they had simply "fallen out of love".

"Even though we cannot be husband and wife, we really did share happy times and I hope we can be good friends forever," Cheng said, choking on his tears and cradling the equally lachrymose Choi.

While we feel their pain, it's hard to take seriously their claims there was no "third party" involved.

Hong Kong paparazzi are saying Angelababy had an affair with Cheng on the set of All's Well Ends Well 2010; while rumors are also circulating that Choi had a fling with a wealthy businessman.

Cheng was confronted with the claims on Monday in Beijing at a media event for his new movie Just Another Pandora's Box.

He looked "visibly haggard" according to the entertainment website xin.msn.com and merely reiterated there were no affairs: "Something new comes up every day and I don't want all these untrue reports anymore."

Next up was 64-year-old actor Wang Xueqi, who recently won the best actor award at the Asian Film Awards for his role in the movie Bodyguards and Assassins.

A Sina report said he filed for divorce after 39 years of marriage, citing the fact his wife lived abroad, they were effectively separated years ago and he was used to living alone.

There was no word on whether a third party was involved.

Then came mainland actress Ma Yili, who updated her blog last week with the words, "I will divorce" husband Wen Zhang, followed by a crying emoticon. The story ended with a smiley face, however, when Ma later said a hacker had posted the message and she couldn't be happier with her actor hubby.

It's good to have friends, Zhang Yimou must be thinking, after a man known only as "Mr Q" e-mailed entertainment reporters defending the nation's number one director.

Zhang was accused in a TV program of not caring for his lonely old mother and ignoring his two brothers.

Mr Q's e-mail denied this, said Zhang's mother couldn't be happier and ended by saying, "This is bullshit and Zhang isn't going to bother responding," according to the Sohu story.

On a less controversial note, CNN has compiled a list of Hong Kong's most beautiful men whose "gorgeous faces are worthy of plastering all over teenagers' bedrooms".

Leslie Cheung, who ended his life by jumping off the Mandarin Oriental on April Fool's Day in 2003, is one of them.

The bisexual star was picked because he "burns up the screen with sex appeal in nearly every movie he's in, playing suave, charismatic characters with a dose of mystery and emotional torment".

Other hunks listed included Tony Leung, " the Clark Gable of Asia", Andy Lau and Bruce Lee.
